Paris, Dresden, Salzburg, München, Hamburg, Berlin, Baden Baden – the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden or La Scala in Milan: the Greek-German soprano Anja Harteros is at home in all of the world’s great opera houses. But in addition to her love for opera, Anja Harteros also burns with a passion for the more intimate — and less high-profile — genre of Lied. An entire universe in just three minutes – that is what makes the Art Songs of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann so fascinating for musicians and audiences alike. These two composers form the focus of the first half of the concert by Anja Harteros and her long-standing collaborator on the piano, Wolfram Rieger. In the second half, Anja Harteros and Wolfram Rieger will venture into the 20th century. A long way from atonality, three of Alban Berg's »Seven Early Songs« were performed as part of a concert in 1907 in which Berg first appeared in public as a composer. Much like Schumann's »Myrten« cycle, these early works by the Schoenberg pupil tell a love story. Anja Harteros and Wolfram Rieger will end their concert with songs by Richard Strauss. It is the leading female roles in Strauss's operas for which Anja Harteros is famous. So it is fitting that she will close the circle with the intimate sound worlds of his Lieder.
