In April, we can look forward to three special concerts with jazz great Wynton Marsalis at the Vienna Konzerthaus. In the very first of these concerts, Marsalis not only appears as trumpeter and bandleader of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but also as a composer: the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Septet makes its debut with the Austrian premiere of Marsalis' suite »The Democracy!«. The eight-part composition was written in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic shook the USA and the whole world. With pieces such as »Out Amongst the People (For J Bat)« and »Be Present«, it is a powerful reflection on turbulent times and challenges us to reflect on the past, rethink the future and actively work for a better world. »Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy,« says Wynton Marsalis. With the rousing and upbeat suite »The Democracy!«, he demonstrates how jazz and the joy of music can bring people closer together.
