Musical Fireworks

A great fireworks display is part of every celebration on a grand scale. King George II also knew this when he invited guests to London's Green Park on April 27, 1749, to celebrate the Peace of Aix-La-Chapelle. However, the planned magnificent illumination got out of hand at the time, so that this royal garden party would have been remembered only as a pyrotechnical fiasco – had it not been for Handel's music! In addition to this »fireworks music«, two concerti grossi by the now forgotten Francesco Barsanti make one wonder what an original composer was hiding there in Handel's orchestra at the viola.
