100 YEARS OF MIKIS THEODORAKIS
ZORBA THE GREEK

and the most popular soundtracks and songs by the legendary Greek composer

A Century of Mikis Theodorakis – is a musical memorial to the life's work of one of the most important composers of the 20th century.
As part of the official Mikis Theodorakis Year 2025, the Wiener Konzerthaus will host an extraordinary concert evening that honours the work of the great composer in all its diversity.
This event is part of the international anniversary »100 Years of Mikis Theodorakis«, which commemorates the artist, humanist and musical visionary worldwide.

A world premiere: Zorba the Greek – completely live
A musical world premiere takes centre stage:
For the first time, the complete music to Zorba the Greek – that work which became the musical soul of Greece – will be performed live, interpreted with the original instruments from the legendary 1964 recording.
The sound of bouzoukis, lutes and the filigree santouri merges with clarinet, violin and skilfully interwoven orchestral arrangements to create an impressive listening experience – a musical combination of tradition and artistic expressiveness, full of passion and poetry.
Estoudiantina Neas Ionias –, Greece's most renowned traditional orchestra – under the artistic direction of Andreas Katsigiannis, a long-time companion and musical confidant of Theodorakis, who was personally entrusted by him with the re-orchestration of many of his works, will provide the musical realisation.

Three of the most important voices in Greek music have been engaged for this special evening: Dimitris Mpasis, Sofia Manousaki and Nefeli Fasouli
Together they embody the emotional and artistic diversity of Theodorakis' music –, from heartfelt lyricism to passionate anthems.

The most popular soundtracks
The programme also includes some of Theodorakis' best-known film scores, including:
Z (1969)
Serpico (1973)
The Honeymoon Song (1959) – an enchanting love song that became famous worldwide through the Beatles' interpretation.
This music shows Theodorakis as a film composer of international standing, whose musical language combines Mediterranean lightness, humanistic depth and orchestral grandeur.

The unforgettable songs
The second part of the evening features some of Mikis Theodorakis' – most important songs, set to poems by important Greek authors, sung in many languages and revered all over the world.
These are songs that have become symbols of freedom, hope and cultural identity – and still move people all over the world today.

A musical evening full of emotion, history and vivid memories.
An extraordinary concert evening that celebrates the life's work of Mikis Theodorakis in all its depth and beauty – interpreted by the most important voices in Greece, accompanied by the country's leading traditional orchestra.
