ECHO Rising Star

Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir discovered her passion for singing at the age of four. Growing up in a musical family, she laid her first vocal foundations at the Söngskóli Sigurðar Demetz. She continued her training at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. During this time, she made her debut at the Berlin State Opera as Papagena in Mozart's »The Magic Flute«. She has been a member of the Basel Theatre ensemble since the 2021/22 season.

Singing as a memory
Guðmundsdóttir sees singing as a form of remembrance and storytelling. She refers to the deep cultural roots of the voice in tradition: »In Iceland, the act of singing is always associated with formative moments in our lives.«

Soprano between tradition and modernity
Artistically, the soprano moves between classical and contemporary expressiveness: »A certain authenticity or honesty in voices attracts me in all styles of singing.« This should touch deeply without feeling foreign. Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir has been nominated as an »ECHO Rising Star« for the 2025/26 season and will be performing on major European concert stages. She makes her debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus with her programme »Migrations – Story of a Bird«. The concert includes works from the late 18th century to the present day – by Joseph Haydn and María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, among others.
