Pure romance

One of the most fascinating pianists of our time invites you to an extraordinary concert evening dedicated entirely to the inner world of two great Romantics: Frédéric Chopin and Franz Schubert.

Franz Schubert
The concert opens with Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata in G major D 894, the first movement of which was also labelled a Fantasy in the 1827 print. »The popular and talented Lieder composer here presents the musical world with a fantasy in which he gave free rein to his inventive spirit and provided the player with harmonic enjoyment without making the execution more difficult by piling up too many difficulties«, writes the first reviewer of the work. Arcadi Volodos is able to emphasise the cantabile, which also runs through the piano works of the Lieder prince, particularly clearly here.

Frédéric Chopin
The second half of the concert is dedicated entirely to Chopin – works full of fine rubati, melancholy colours and dance-like elegance. Volodos allows the seemingly small forms to blossom with great intensity before the mysterious Prélude in C sharp minor op. 45 leads the way to the monumental Sonata in B flat minor op. 35. This key work of piano literature – with its famous funeral march – unfolds a dramatic range between intimate lyricism and existential force in Volodos' hands.
