Orchestra of voices
Chanticleer, the renowned vocal ensemble from San Francisco, has been inspiring audiences with its vocal virtuosity and stylistic range since it was founded in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto. With over a million recordings sold, worldwide tours and two Grammy Awards, it is one of today's leading vocal ensembles.
A musical arc spanning centuries
Chanticleer's repertoire is rooted in the Renaissance and has been continuously expanded. It encompasses a broad spectrum of classical, gospel, jazz and pop music. At the Wiener Konzerthaus, Chanticleer also presents a programme that demonstrates the breadth of its repertoire: from the subtle polyphony of Guillaume de Machaut's Ars nova to Renaissance motets by William Byrd and Orlando di Lasso to arrangements of American folk songs, spirituals and pop songs – by Joni Mitchell, for example.
