Hands in prayer
Large-scale choral works, arias for four soloists, dramatic episodes, stark contrasts: Jan Dismas Zelenka’s church music encompasses a wide variety of musical techniques and styles. The opulent Dresden Baroque of the Saxon Elector and Polish King Augustus II the Strong finds its musical counterpart in Zelenka’s works. Whilst Bach was working in Leipzig, Zelenka was employed at the chapel of his Catholic court in Dresden. Václav Luks and the Collegium 1704 deserve credit for reviving his expressive music; their interpretations captivate with their flawless intonation as well as their vitality and sensuality of sound.
