Gottfried Keller: Kleider machen Leute
In the story »Clothes Make the Man« by Gottfried Keller from 1874, the penniless tailor Wenzel Strapinski is mistaken for a rich Polish count by the citizens of the small Swiss town of Goldach because of his elegant dress. The ensuing turmoil is mainly caused by the superficiality, double standards and rigid class thinking of the citizens of Goldach, combined with their egotistical calculation for advancement and enrichment. Gottfried Keller, who in addition to being a writer was also the First State Clerk of the Canton of Zurich, issues his vote of no confidence in the pure will of the people in his story at a time when the first direct democracy in Europe was being installed in Switzerland.
