Three solo sonatas and a string trio
Jean-Guihen Queyras opens the evening with Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata Op. 8 for solo cello. After Johann Sebastian Bach had laid the foundations with his cello suites, significant works – sonatas for solo cello – were composed, particularly in the 20th century, including Kodály’s Op. 8. Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin, Sz 117, performed by Isabelle Faust, is also based on Baroque models. Finally, Tabea Zimmermann takes to the stage with György Ligeti’s Sonata for Solo Viola – a composition he was inspired to write by her playing. In the second half of the concert, the three musicians demonstrate their chamber music skills: with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s only string trio in E flat major, K 563 »Divertimento«, they provide a thoroughly classical finale to the evening.
