Robert Schumann's piano trios

Vilde Frang, who is not only a celebrated concert soloist but also a passionate chamber musician, explores the fascinating soundscapes of Robert Schumann's three piano trios with Maximilian Hornung and Denis Kozhukhin. Via the Piano Quintet op. 44, the Piano Quartet op. 47 and finally the Fantasy Pieces for Piano Trio op. 88, all of which were composed in the so-called »chamber music year« 1842, Schumann systematically approached the piano trio genre: in 1847, he presented Clara with the score of the first Piano Trio in D minor op. 63 for her 28th birthday. »So youthful and vigorous« it was, she remarked enthusiastically. The light-flooded second piano trio in F major op. 80 »warmed« her »deepest soul«, as Clara noted in her diary. She wrote no less euphorically about the Third Piano Trio in G minor op. 110: "It is a work »that sweeps you away to the wildest depths«.
