The perfect criminal
The very first images reveal who Fântomas is: the man with many faces. He effortlessly changes his hairstyle, beard and clothes, slipping into different identities.
First part of the crime series
»In the Shadow of the Guillotine« is the first part of the famous silent film crime series »Fântomas« by Louis Feuillade from 1913. Inspector Juve and the journalist Fandor face the Parisian master criminal Fântomas, but their investigations repeatedly come to nothing because the perpetrator cannot be clearly identified. Here, anarchic freedom asserts itself against bourgeois order.
Milestone in film history with live music
This forerunner of modern thrillers, which shines with suspense, masking and ingenious crimes, is considered a milestone in film history. It is accompanied by live music by Gabriel Cazes, composer and jazz pianist who works for the biggest theatres, and trumpeter Nicolas Giraud.
