Sophokles: Antigone
Antigone defies the ruler of Thebes, Creon, and buries her brother despite the royal ban. In return, Creon has her walled up alive, but the harsh punishment has catastrophic consequences.
In his ancient drama »Antigone«, Sophocles poses questions about the relationship between the citizen and the state: does the citizen perceive himself as a political creator or as someone who blindly obeys? Does the politician see himself as a prudent advocate of the common good or as a ruthless representative of his own power interests? How compatible are individual and state principles? Questions about democracy that are still relevant 2,468 years later.
