Lukas Sternath

It has been four years since Lukas Sternath from Vienna caused a sensation at the International ARD Music Competition: the pianist was awarded seven special prizes and first prize. Since then, he has spent two seasons as Great Talent with the Vienna Konzerthaus Society, one season as Rising Star of the ECHO (European Concert Hall Organisation), performed at the BBC Proms, made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic and appeared at such renowned venues as the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

Between Schubert and Liszt
The 25-year-old is shaping his debut recital series at »Klavier im Mozart-Saal« as a poetic and virtuosic journey: a voyage between Schubert and Liszt, between word and sound. The starting point is Schubert’s song »Der Wanderer«, which, like so many songs, found its way into music history via Liszt’s desk and keyboard. Starting from this, the piano recital leads not only to a series of further Liszt arrangements of Schubert’s most beautiful songs, but also to Schubert’s »Wanderer Fantasy«, in which the composer quotes the motif from the eponymous art song. The second half of the recital is devoted entirely to Franz Liszt: to his »Années de pèlerinage«, which were inspired by Goethe’s coming-of-age novel »Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship«. Here, however, one thing is certain: these are no years of apprenticeship; here, a true master has the floor and takes to the podium!
