Verdi's »Messa da Requiem« – a masterpiece between opera and sacred music

Giuseppe Verdi's »Messa da Requiem« is considered by many to be the most important work of church music after Beethoven's »Missa solemnis«. However, this requiem mass, written under the impression of the death of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, is just as unsuitable for liturgical use as Beethoven's festive mass. In both cases, the performance time is far too long, the instrumentation far too large and, not least, the specific artistic weight far too great. Verdi's Requiem has long since established itself as a full-length concert work that does not deny its operatic origins.

Requiem with operatic drama, performed by the Zurich Opera Orchestra & Chorus
It is all the more fitting that Verdi's »Messa da Requiem« will be performed by the Zurich Opera Orchestra and Chorus at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The orchestra will be conducted by its General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda. Internationally acclaimed opera stars such as Marina Rebeka and Joseph Calleja are the soloists for this evening.
