Shostakovich and Sibelius

The music of Dmitri Shostakovich runs like a common thread through Klaus Mäkelä's work. The Finnish conductor regularly devotes himself to the works of the Russian composer. Last year, Mäkelä recorded Symphonies 4, 5 & 6 with the Oslo Philharmonic to rave reviews: »According to BR-Klassik, »the short and crisp Sixth in particular convinces with a rarely heard freshness and vitality. In addition to this symphony, we also hear the colourfully orchestrated Lemminkäinen Suite by Jean Sibelius. The four-part tone poem is based on episodes from the Finnish national epic Kalevala and is considered a key work of Finnish symbolism.
