Hardly any contemporary artist is as versatile as Plácido Domingo. Singer and conductor, tenor and baritone, acclaimed opera star and champion of young talent – for more than half a century, he has shaped the international music scene and thrilled audiences on the world’s greatest stages.
In 2027, there will be a very special reason to celebrate in Vienna: Plácido Domingo will be looking back on 60 years of performing in the Austrian capital. He made his Viennese debut in 1967 as Don Carlo. Since then, Vienna has repeatedly been a key location in his extraordinary artistic career. Now, to mark this special anniversary, he is returning once more for a glittering opera gala on Sunday 11 April 2027 at 6.00 pm at the Vienna Konzerthaus, together with the Vienna Volksoper Symphony Orchestra.
Domingo’s operatic repertoire comprises more than 150 roles – an extraordinary variety ranging from the great tenor parts to demanding baritone roles. Whether Don Carlo, Radamès, Don José, Otello, Cavaradossi, Manrico, Siegmund, Lohengrin, Parsifal or Simon Boccanegra: For decades, Domingo has left his mark on the great roles of the operatic repertoire with his unmistakable voice and stage presence. Since 2009, he has also devoted himself to the great baritone roles, thereby demonstrating once again his extraordinary musical versatility.
Yet Plácido Domingo is far more than just one of the most successful opera singers of our time. As a conductor, he has led more than 500 opera and concert performances worldwide. He also made a significant mark as artistic director and general director of the opera houses in Los Angeles and Washington. His joint performances with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti as »The Three Tenors« are legendary, having introduced millions of people to the fascination of opera.
Domingo has received numerous international honours and prestigious awards in recognition of his extraordinary artistic career. As a patron of young singers, he founded the renowned Operalia competition and has been supporting talented young singers for decades. He is also committed to promoting Spanish culture and the zarzuela as an ambassador.
Six decades on stage in Vienna – and a career that has made opera history: The opera gala at the Vienna Konzerthaus on 11 April 2027 offers a unique opportunity to experience Plácido Domingo as an exceptional opera singer and artistic personality, and to celebrate his very own Viennese stage anniversary together with him.
