Somi: New African Jazz

An expressive voice and profound lyrics – are Somi's trademarks. The singer, who grew up in Illinois and Zambia, describes her style as »New African Jazz«: jazz, soul and pop meet traditional African sounds.

Songs for a better world
Somi's music reflects her social commitment. In her lyrics, she addresses issues such as transnationalism, cultural identity and genocide. She dedicated her album »Zenzile« to the South African icon Miriam Makeba, who campaigned against apartheid. It was honoured with a Jazz Music Award.

Award-winning and down-to-earth
Somi's list of awards is long, and in 2021 she was the first African woman to be nominated for a Grammy. Despite her international career, Somi has remained down-to-earth. She describes herself as an »East African girl from the Midwest with a love of family, poetry and freedom«. Now the charismatic singer and her captivating music can be experienced for the first time at the Vienna Konzerthaus!
