And it is precisely in this spirit that Erwin Steinhauer presents his monumental work »The Last Days of Mankind«, which was written as a direct response to the First World War. Karl Kraus made around 170 guest appearances at the Vienna Konzerthaus, including several readings from his most famous work. »Tones race and rattle through time and swell into the chorale of the unholy plot«, as the preface states. And Erwin Steinhauer, who has been appointed a Kammerschauspieler, strikes every necessary note for the numerous characters from Kraus’s cosmos – ranging from crass and ignorant to bloodless and excitedly cackling. Framed by excerpts from military and salon music, operetta hits and wine tavern songs, performed by Peter Rosmanith, Joe Pinkl, Georg Graf and Anton Burger, this moving performance becomes a total work of art.
