»Laughing and joking«

Easter is a festival of joy. It is no coincidence that the custom of Easter laughter has existed since the Middle Ages: in his sermon, the priest tried to make the churchgoers laugh. Echoes of this can also be found in Johann Sebastian Bach's solemn »Easter Oratorio« BWV 249, which opens with the words »Laughter and Jokes« with lively melismas. The Constellation Choir & Orchestra place it at the centre of their concert on the Wednesday after the Easter weekend. The cantata »Der Himmel lacht, die Erde jubiliert« BWV 31, also intended for Easter Sunday, will open the concert. These two works are grouped around the cantata for Easter Monday »Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden« BWV 6, which in contrast is of a contemplative nature. The conductor is Sir John Eliot Gardiner, one of the most distinguished Bach interpreters of our time, whose many years of experience and stylistic precision characterise this evening.
