Funiculì, funiculà (1880)
Stefano Sorrentino, Marco Ferrante and Alessandro Fortunato are bringing the vocal tradition of Naples to Vienna. The city has not only given the world its great tenors, but also a repertoire of songs that are still sung everywhere today – from »‘O sole mio« to »Funiculì, funiculà«, which was originally written as an advertising jingle for the Vesuvius funicular.
The evening spans the spectrum from opera to art song: Verdi’s »La donna è mobile«, Puccini’s »Nessun dorma«, as well as the intermezzo from Mascagni’s »Cavalleria rusticana« in a piano trio. At the heart of the programme is a Christmas section featuring Schubert’s »Ave Maria«, »Adeste fideles«, »White Christmas« and »Tu scendi dalle stelle« – the quintessential Italian Christmas carol, written by a Neapolitan. To round off the programme, the classics of the canzone napoletana and Lucio Dallas’s »Caruso«, a tribute to Enrico Caruso, after whom the ensemble is named.
