A silent movie with music by the Wiener Brut

Vienna in 1932: In a suburban tavern called »Zum grünen Kakadu«, card players, tramps, strizzos and the innocent Kitty, the landlord's foster daughter, go in and out. Unbeknownst to her, she is the heiress to a fortune – and therefore naturally coveted by various parties. The silent film »Der grüne Kakadu«, by and starring Franz Hohenberger, is the only surviving feature-length amateur film from the period.

Stories of time and love

The film is a living testimony to contemporary history with original images of dusty backyards, streets and Prater stalls. Sascha Peres composed music to accompany the film's fateful love story, which draws on elements of the period as well as music by Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. The director's granddaughter Katharina Hohenberger wrote the lyrics to the music and delivers live music to the silent film with her ensemble Wiener Brut: »Treff'ma uns beim Wirt'n um die Eck'n, und duad's euch ned bei euch daham versteck'n«, she sings, for example. An evening of original Viennese music, comedy, drama, romance, intrigue and action!
