On the 90th birthday of Zubin Mehta
»You inspire me, I inspire you. It's like lava flowing from a volcano. And that keeps you young!« This is how Zubin Mehta describes his communication with the musicians. It really has kept him young: he celebrates his 90th birthday on 29 April 2026. To mark this day of honour, he conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in a concert with Bruch's Violin Concerto, played by Pinchas Zukerman, and Antonín Dvořák's 7th Symphony.
A conducting legend
He made his debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1958. Four years earlier, the Mumbai-born conductor had come to Vienna, where he studied with Hans Swarowsky. He later conducted orchestras in the Great Hall, including the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, New York and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his immense conducting skills, he was a cosmopolitan who was not afraid to express his opinions openly. The United Nations therefore awarded him the Peace and Tolerance Prize in 1999.
