Bruckner's Seventh: A milestone in symphonic music

Marie Jacquot, Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, dedicates two concert evenings to Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. The premiere on 30 December 1884 in Leipzig under the direction of Arthur Nikisch was a resounding success and marked Bruckner's international breakthrough. The famous Adagio in particular had a lasting impact on the composer's reception: this moving masterpiece forms the emotional centre of the Seventh. With this movement, Bruckner created a musical requiem for Richard Wagner –. The Adagio combines Bruckner's deeply rooted Catholic piety with his fervent admiration for Wagner.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto: Romantic virtuosity
The first part of the evening is performed by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, who has been wowing audiences around the world: »The sheer power of her articulation was a true marvel; the supple tone in the highest register, combined with brilliant fullness and projection in the lower register, became a tonal phenomenon«, enthused the press after her performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto at the Concertgebouw.

At the Wiener Konzerthaus, Bomsori Kim, whose first name »Sound of Spring« is rare in Korea, will perform Mendelssohn's only violin concerto –, probably the most original work in the Romantic violin concerto literature.
