It is his longest and formally most daring work, and he himself characterised it as one »in which the whole world is indeed reflected«. We are talking about Gustav Mahler's 3rd Symphony, conceived as a »constantly increasing articulation of feeling [...] from the dull, rigid, merely elementary being (of the forces of nature) to the tender structure of the human heart, which in turn points beyond it (to God) and reaches out«.

Following successful performances of Mahler's Fourth and First in 2025, chief conductor Petr Popelka and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra are now turning their attention to the all-conquering Third. The enchanting »Mitternachtslied« is sung by two-time Grammy Award winner Sasha Cooke, who once made her debut in the Vienna Konzerthaus under Michael Tilson Thomas in precisely this part.
