Composed at ground level, addressed to the highest authorities

In 1903, the Vienna Concert Association Orchestra, the forerunner of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, gave the world premiere of Anton Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony. »I don’t even want to start on the Ninth; I don’t dare, for even Beethoven brought his life to a close with his Ninth’«, Bruckner explained his difficulties with the work. »… now I dedicate my final work to the Majesty of all Majesties, the dear Lord, and hope that He will grant me enough time to complete it«, Bruckner is said to have told his doctor. He worked on the finale right up until his final days, but died before completing it in a ground-floor flat at the Belvedere, which Emperor Franz Joseph I had made available to him due to his respiratory failure.

Robin Ticciati, Principal Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin from 2017 to 2025, conducts the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Following the concert, the horn players of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra will provide a relaxed conclusion to the evening’s concert in the Grand Foyer.
