Description
The original sound ensembles of Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Philippe Herreweghe bring two works of the century, not only of the Baroque, but of vocal composition in general: Bach's Mass in B minor and his St Matthew Passion remain mysteries of genius in their depth and sensitivity as well as the emotion they still evoke in listeners today. Nietzsche heard Bach's Mass in B minor with an »immeasurable sense of wonder«, and Mendelssohn set a Bach renaissance in motion with his performance of the large-scale St Matthew Passion. In addition to the grand 300th anniversary celebration of the monumental work with the Collegium Vocale Gent, two more intimate projects by the Belgian ensemble a nocte temporis and the Swiss orchestra of Rudolf Lutz's J. S. Bach Foundation shed light on the diversity of the Baroque grand master's cantata oeuvre.
