Description
Masterpieces from four centuries characterise the cycle, which is mainly performed by the Vienna Philharmonic: Esa-Pekka Salonen opens with the 5th Symphony by his compatriot Jean Sibelius, young star Klaus Mäkelä presents Igor Stravinsky's »Sacre du printemps«. Rudolf Buchbinder is the first of three outstanding pianists to thrill audiences with sparkling piano concertos: alongside Alain Altinoglu, he devotes himself to Gershwin. Lahav Shani leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra through a Russian programme as soloist from the piano and conductor's podium, and John Adams has written a new solo concerto for Víkingur Ólafsson. With the Cleveland Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, top international orchestras complete the cycle: under Franz Welser-Möst and Sir Simon Rattle respectively, they present Strauss' »Sinfonia domestica« and Mahler's 3rd Symphony, works that do full justice to the name of the cycle.
