The Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft
The history of a traditional and innovative institution
The Wiener Konzerthaus is one of the most important institutions in international musical life. Together with the State Opera and the Musikverein, it forms the prominent triad that has established Vienna's worldwide reputation as a leading music metropolis and, thanks to its unique combination of a sense of tradition and innovative spirit, has long been indispensable for Vienna's vibrant cultural climate.
The Konzerthausgesellschaft - a private association
The Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft, which has operated the Wiener Konzerthaus since the building was completed, is still a private, non-profit organisation today. Only 12.6% of the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft's expenditure is covered by public subsidies. With around 500 of its own events each year and over 94 subscription cycles, the Wiener Konzerthaus today not only has an extremely extensive, but also a particularly varied programme, which includes not only the entire classical repertoire with orchestral and choral concerts, concertante operas, chamber music, piano and song recitals, but also children's concerts as well as literature, jazz and folk music series.
A house for music
»To be a place for the cultivation of noble music, a meeting point for artistic endeavours, a house for music and a house for Vienna« - the Konzerthaus has continuously and vehemently pursued this claim, made at its opening on 19 October 1913, through all the political and social vicissitudes of this century.
Especially in the years since 1945, the Wiener Konzerthaus has repeatedly carried out pioneering artistic work and developed groundbreaking initiatives. The series of events it has launched have set decisive accents - be it the revival and internationalisation of Austrian musical life after the Second World War through the International Music Festival, the concentrated commitment to the music of the 20th century, e.g. as part of Wien Modern, or the impetus for the renaissance of early music thanks to the Resonanzen festival.
A home for artists and audiences
The Wiener Konzerthaus is not only a sought-after meeting place for the most renowned international performers, but also a central home and forum for numerous Austrian artists and institutions. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Quatuor Mosaïques, Hagen Quartet and Klangforum Wien have long been in residence here, while initiatives such as Musica Juventutis present up-and-coming musicians to a broad public for the first time.
With over 400 other events organised by hall tenants every year, covering the entire concert spectrum between classical and popular music, as well as balls, company parties, fashion shows, congresses and business presentations, the Wiener Konzerthaus has proven to be an indispensable venue.
