»Die Stadt ohne Juden«

The 1924 silent film, »Die Stadt ohne Juden«, is one of the most atonishing works of art from the First Republic: based on the prophetic »novel of the day after tomorrow« by the Jewish novelist and journalist Hugo Bettauer, it shows the explusion of the Jewish population and the ensuing loss for the city. The film was discovered by chance at a flea market in Paris. And it is thanks to a major crowd-funding initiative that the Filmarchiv Austria can now show the completed and restored version. For this exceptional project, the Wiener Konzerthaus and other partners commissioned film music from Olga Neuwirth. The world premiere will be the first of two major projects marking the 50th birthday of one of Austria’s leading composers, in a co-production between the Wiener Konzerthaus and Wien Modern.
