To the 75th birthday

»Incredible« is an obvious word when one associates Kremer's current performances with his 75th birthday. Yes, he has definitely grown older – only you don't see it, you don't hear it, and actually his age is also irrelevant because he is one of those artists who may play some works differently today than he did thirty or forty years ago, but he doesn't play them specifically »more maturely.« The maturity of Gidon Kremer is certainly an inner and deep one that characterizes his playing.

Emigrated from the then USSR, Kremer remained faithful to those whose works had musically accompanied him since his beginnings there, among them Mieczysław Weinberg again and again. He acts with never-ending persuasion on behalf of that composer who was probably most like Shostakovich's genius. One work in which this is impressively evident is the Violin Concerto op. 67 from 1959, with which the violinist gives the audience and himself a precious gift for his own anniversary. It conveys the wild turmoil of a persecuted, a searching man of his time alongside pure splendidly singing beauty and questionable triumph.
