A Statement: »Phoenix«

Lakecia Benjamin's latest album was hailed as »terrific« in the jazz world as soon as it was released in January 2023. She herself refers to it as her actual debut. Benjamin, a multiple Grammy Award winner, can point to a respectable resume as a musician: She has performed with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and Harry Belafonte, and played at Barack Obama's second inauguration. The native New Yorker, who as a young woman played in salsa and merengue bands, drew inspiration from the likes of John and Alice Coltrane. Her latest project is a narrative from post-pandemic America, a tribute to strong, black women: musically, one misses her typical funk just as much as the current modal jazz.
