Obsession and ecstasy

The repetition of a bass motif with simultaneous improvised development of the melody inspired numerous composers in the Baroque period to create masterpieces. The form obeys a rigid pattern, as in Baroque architecture, fixed elements are strung together. In this way, despite the free handling of the melody, a unity is achieved that holds even larger musical structures together and prevents them from slipping into formless fantasy. The original dance character of the ciacona and passacaglia can, but does not have to, become perceptible. Embark on a journey with Ars Antiqua Austria and enjoy the sheer boundless variety of emotions and virtuosity that ostinato forms offered the masters of the time.
