With Ars Antiqua Austria, the name says it all: violinist and ensemble leader Gunar Letzbor has rendered outstanding services to the rediscovery and revival of specifically Austrian baroque music like no other domestic protagonist of historical performance practice. The native of Hallstatt has a patriotic focus on the rich monastic musical culture of the »Land ob der Enns« (the historical name of Upper Austria): This time the excursion leads to Schlägl Abbey in the upper Mühlviertel, which since 1580 has not only been home to a brewery rich in tradition, but has also collected undreamed-of musical treasures over the course of the centuries. Ars Antiqua Austria indulges in the »sweetest affection« of the Viennese Court Kapellmeister Antonio Bertali for viola da gamba and violin in the second date of its current Konzerthaus cycle, before celebrating Gunar Letzbor's 63rd birthday in mid-April with a hearty »Ostinato« program and rushing chaconnes.
