Beethoven - Bruch - Saint-Saëns
Beethoven's »Eroica«, Saint-Saëns' first cello concerto and Bruch's »Kol
Nidrei« form the dense program of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra under
the baton of Julian Rachlin. That Beethoven's »Eroica« already
astonished contemporaries is handed down to us through a statement by
his student Ferdinand Ries, who stated that »heaven and earth (...) must
tremble under one at its performance (...)«. Some 70 years later, the
premiere of Saint-Saëns' first cello concerto also became a success,
ending a series of reception failures by the composer. Thanks to the
originality of its form, the concerto remains a fixture in the
repertoire of cellists to this day. Audience favorite Mischa Maisky is
able to lend splendor to the extremely rewarding solo part. Another
highlight of the concert literature for this string instrument can be
experienced with Bruch's »Kol Nidrei«.
