Thomas Mann: Mario und der Zauberer

How fascism manipulates free will – is the subject of the novella »Mario and the Magician« by Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann, written between 1926 and 1929. The author tells his story about the magician and hypnotist Cipolla against the backdrop of fascist and nationalist Italy – a few years before Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933. In Mann's parable on fascism, hypnosis serves as a metaphor for the seduction of society against its will through the manipulation of an authoritarian, abysmal leader.
