Strength in silence

The Berlin-based band DOTA is actually a quartet: alongside singer and lyricist Dota Kehr, with her unmistakable voice, there are guitarist Jan Rohrbach, drummer Janis Görlich and Jonas Hauer on accordion and piano. In their songs, DOTA likes to tackle current issues such as climate change and the ever-widening gap between rich and poor. Sonically, the band is now embarking on a new chapter, expanding the core line-up to include a string trio, a trombone and a clarinet.

A pocket-sized pop chamber ensemble
This tiny orchestra unfolds a vast range of sounds that add further dimensions to Dota Kehr’s multi-layered poetry. The sound is at times delicate, at times powerful, yet always finely tuned. Polyphonic vocals create rich, warm soundscapes, whilst unusual instrumental combinations and surprising arrangements cast familiar songs in ever-changing light. The programme features well-known pieces and rarely performed gems from DOTA’s repertoire, as well as award-winning musical settings of Mascha Kaléko’s poems. Here, DOTA and the tiny orchestra impressively demonstrate just how much power lies in quietness.
