A composer who makes history

Icelandic cellist, singer and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is an artist who consistently defies labelling. With her virtuosity, versatility and tonal originality, she occupies a unique place in the world of music.

Multiple award-winning
Hildur Guðnadóttir gained international attention with her haunting film scores. For her work on Todd Phillips' dark psychological thriller »Joker«, she became the third woman ever to win an Oscar in 2020 – and made history as the first female composer to win an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA in a single season.

Her Grammy-winning soundtrack for the series »Chernobyl« was created from recordings made at the decommissioned Ignalina nuclear power plant, which she moulded into oppressive sound collages. Her music for »Tár« is also characterised by atmospheric depth and combines original compositions with classical elements.

Between new music, electronics and performance
For years, Guðnadóttir has been working at the interface between new music, experimental electronics and performance. Collaborations with artists such as Throbbing Gristle, The Knife and Múm emphasise her stylistic openness and experimental approach.

»Where to From« – new project
Hildur Guðnadóttir is now presenting her latest project »Where to From« at the Wiener Konzerthaus. It is based on musical sketches and mobile phone recordings that have accumulated over many years and have now been condensed into intimate, contemplative compositions: »The original ideas and sketches accumulated over six or seven years in my mobile phone«, reports Guðnadóttir. »After working on so many film scores, it was exciting for me to take a completely different look at how I actually encounter music. There is a lot of space in the music in my head. When I listened to these mobile phone recordings again, I realised that this is exactly the mental space I particularly like to be in.«
