The piano as a room
With the project »11,000 strings«, the Great Hall itself becomes an instrument. In his composition for 50 pianos, Georg Friedrich Haas creates a radically new listening space that deliberately leaves traditional concert forms behind. The audience sits in the centre of the hall, surrounded by 50 pianos arranged in a ring around the room. Sound is not created frontally, but moves, layers, circles, condenses and dissolves again. The listeners find themselves in the centre of the resonating body of a huge instrument with 11,000 strings.
Listening as a physical experience
Vibrations are not only perceptible, they can be felt. Proximity and distance, direction and time change, the ear becomes a sense of orientation and previous listening experiences are radically questioned. Every place in the room opens up its own perspective on what is happening – No two sounds are the same, no two listening experiences are identical. »11.000 Saiten« is less a concert than a collective soundscape, less a performance than a state – an event that liberates the piano from its soloistic tradition and allows it to be experienced anew as an architectural, breathing body of sound.
