Buchbinder's leitmotif
No work has accompanied Rudolf Buchbinder as long and intensely as the »33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli«, better known as the »Diabelli Variations«. The pianist even describes Beethoven's Opus 120 as his »life leitmotif«: »For me, the greatness of Beethoven becomes clear in the ›Diabelli Variations‹: humorous, angry, melancholy or swinging – there is no state of mind that he does not describe here«, says Buchbinder. »They are music about music, a continuation of Bach's ›Goldberg Variations‹ and a labyrinth of cross-references, quotations and connections.«
Detailed knowledge
Rudolf Buchbinder can point to numerous recordings of the »Diabelli Variations«. With »The Last Waltz«, the profound Beethoven interpreter even published a book in which he describes his personal approach to this music. He has already performed the monumental piano work four times at the Wiener Konzerthaus –, first in 1987 and most recently eight years ago. Now Buchbinder dares to interpret it again. It will be exciting to see what facets he can elicit from this familiar masterpiece this time.
