A journey into the American choral tradition
The internationally renowned British vocal ensemble VOCES8 recently wowed audiences at the »Gemischter Satz« festival at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Now they are back as guests and present »Lead Me Home«, a cross-section of the American choral tradition, from spirituals and folk songs to contemporary compositions.
From Byrd to Porter
The programme under the motto »Lead Me Home« includes works such as Virgil Thomson's »My shepherd will supply my need« or spirituals such as »My lord, what a morning« and »Steal away« as well as visionary works by Caroline Shaw, Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. In addition to these contemplative compositions, Samuel Barber's »To be sung on the water« and the American folk song »Shenandoah« can also be heard, as well as songs by the Beatles, Bobby McFerrin and Cole Porter. The programme begins with William Byrd's »Praise our Lord, all ye Gentiles«, a work from Elizabethan England.
