Dark stories, great music

The Vienna Philharmonic and Jakub Hrůša present a captivating programme of dark masterpieces: Béla Bartók's expressionist concert suite »The Miraculous Mandarin« tells of violence and seduction in a shattered metropolis. Antonín Dvořák's »The Wood Dove« explores guilt and remorse in intense soundscapes. The world premiere of the symphonic poem was conducted by Leoš Janáček, who was inspired by Dvořák's techniques of variation and orchestration, including in his composition »Taras Bulba«. The rousing orchestral rhapsody is one of Janáček's best-known orchestral works today – a stirring musical epic full of passion and drama.
