40. Internationales Musikfest
29/05/23 – 26/06/23
The Wiener Philharmoniker and Philippe Jordan will open the 40th International Music Festival with the short orchestral piece "Atmosphères" by György Ligeti, composed in 1961. Based on this key work of New Music, which became widely known not least through its use in the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film »2001: A Space Odyssey«, the entire festival programme explores in a variety of ways different intersections and forms of interaction between music, the performing arts and the visual arts. Of course, Ligeti's oeuvre will play a major role in this programme, but the romantic double talents of E. T. A. Hoffmann and Robert Schumann, the synaesthete Alexander Scriabin, Modest Mussorgsky's »translations« of images into music and current multimedia concepts will also play their part.
