Symphonie Nr. 6 h-moll op. 74 »Pathétique« (1893)
Virtuosity and quiet final notes
A violin concerto in which virtuosity becomes part of the symphonic development, and a symphony that ends not triumphantly but quietly: With works by Valentin Silvestrov, Jean Sibelius and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, covers a wide range.
The violin as part of the orchestra
Following Silvestrov’s »Serenade« for string orchestra, Julia Fischer takes on the solo part in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor. Sibelius, himself a trained violinist, places the highest technical demands on the soloist, yet closely integrates her with the orchestra and the musical form.
A finale that defies tradition
Tchaikovsky’s Sixth brings the evening to a close. According to the composer himself, he had in mind a programme for the symphony that »was to remain a mystery to all«. Its unusual slow finale continues to give the work its unmistakable character to this day. Tchaikovsky died just nine days after the premiere in October 1893.
