Greetings from the New World with Barber’s Violin Concerto
At the age of 18, María Dueñas won the Menuhin Competition in 2021. She is now at home on the world’s major concert stages. She looks forward to a promising future and is constantly expanding her repertoire, whilst also paying tribute to great idols of the past, notably Jascha Heifetz. Accompanied by the Wiener Symphoniker under the baton of their principal conductor Petr Popelka, who will open the concert with Mozart’s Little Symphony in G minor, she will present one of her latest discoveries: Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, which captivates not only with its late-Romantic, lyrical cantilenas but also with the breathless, highly virtuosic »Moto perpetuo« in the finale.
Bohemian cheerfulness with Dvořák’s Eighth
Following this greeting from the New World, the orchestra turns its attention to a symphony that Antonín Dvořák composed before he left for the USA. In his Eighth Symphony, he once again captures all the cheerfulness of his beloved country estate in Vysocká. »‘My head is full of ideas’«, he remarked shortly before composing the symphony, in which one seems to hear the lush green of the meadows with the chirping birds, the blooming roses and the cooing of his pigeons.
