Unpredictable energy

The conflict is written all over Martin Kohlstedt's face. It doesn't matter whether the composer and pianist connects with the audience for a moment or sinks back into his refuge of keyboards for steel strings and synthesizers. Relentlessly, his gaze searches, feels its way through any space, usually getting ahead of his head by heart-stopping moments. As a musician, this is a gamble, a provocative as well as provoking play on the edge of one's own control - as a composer, on the other hand, it has concept. For Kohlstedt is known for the energy and unpredictability of his concerts and performs in the greatest concert halls worldwide. But there is no attitude of grand staging in all this, only a different way of thinking about music and communicating with it: There are no works, but instead compositional set pieces whose power lies in the potential of their combinability and variations. These modules, as Kohlstedt calls them, yield unpredictable punch lines and conflicts precisely in their combination.
