An orchestra called organ

Metropolis is the city of the future. While the working class of the »lower city« ekes out an existence as slaves, the upper class - surrounded by skyscrapers and machines - lives in luxury. When it comes to revolt, a human-like robot plays a leading role. Fritz Lang's groundbreaking film from 1927 is science fiction par excellence and has been a UNESCO World Documentary Heritage Site since 2001. In January, »Metropolis« inspires Thierry Escaich to create futuristic music. A lover of cinema, the French composer and organist regularly improvises to silent films such as »The Phantom of the Opera«, with which he made a guest appearance at Vienna's Konzerthaus in 2020. »The organ is a whole orchestra. I hear violins, flutes, horns, the different mixtures and combinations«, says the titular organist of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont. When Escaich sits down at the great Rieger organ in the Vienna Konzerthaus for Lang's masterpiece, we can look forward to this same richness of sound!
