One should celebrate the festivities as they fall: On 3 January 2024, HK Gruber, one of the most successful Austrian composers of our time, will celebrate his 81st birthday. The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, of which he was a double bassist for more than a quarter of a century, and the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft, which elected him an honorary member in 2009, will celebrate this not quite round anniversary on the 22nd of April. The jubilarian himself is at the conductor's podium, and all the works on the programme were written by him: The »Manhattan Broadcasts« by the 20-year-old have been described in the music magazine »Rondo« as »a wild cross between George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Kurt Weill«. The soloist in Gruber's trumpet concerto »Aerial«, one of his most successful compositions ever, is the fantastic virtuoso Selina Ott. The highlight of the evening, however, is the Austrian premiere of a seven-part orchestral suite of about half an hour from Gruber's most recent opera »Tales from the Vienna Woods« after Ödön von Hórvath, which the »Financial Times« characterised as a counterpart to Verdi's »Falstaff«: as »a serious work at the end of a long career of hilarity«.
