Since ancient times, myths have attempted to provide simple answers to complex questions about being human. In the search for meaning, modern authors have created variations: Thus Sisyphus is a happy man in Albert Camus, Medea is no longer a child murderer in Christa Wolf, and André Gide imagined Prometheus as an ex-matchmaker. Friedrich Dürrenmatt turns the myth of Oedipus upside down, and Margaret Atwood brushes the Odyssey against the grain with Penelope's gaze. We encounter myths in everyday life - for example in Roland Barthes, who crowned the Citroën DS the »Déesse« - or transfigure submerged worlds such as the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in Joseph Roth. Readers such as Erwin Steinhauer and Bibiana Beglau invite us to explore the rich variety of mythical narratives, masterfully staged musically by Anton Gerzenberg and Saskia Giorgini, among others.
