The Vienna Symphony Orchestra's matinees will open with the monumental Ninth by Anton Bruckner, whose birth will be celebrated for the 200th time in 2024. The programme continues on an equally monumental note with Gustav Mahler's Eighth under the direction of Philippe Jordan and Bach's Christmas Oratorio under the baton of original sound specialist Václav Luks. Two of the matinees - one focussing on Mahler, the other on Strauss - will be conducted by chief conductor Petr Popelka. A special rarity, the symphony »Roland furieux« by the Irish-French Romantic composer Augusta Holmès, will be presented by Principal Guest Conductor Marie Jacquot. Martha Argerich is the soloist in the matinee under the direction of Lahav Shani.
